2019 Subaru Forester Diminished Value Case Study V1

The fully redesigned 2019 Forester is a good used compact SUV. It has class-leading cargo space and a nice interior with plenty of room for passengers. It was considered one of the best compact SUVs for families when it was new because of its combination of cargo and passenger space, safety and reliability ratings, positive reviews from automotive journalists, and available family-friendly features.

Forester models are powered by 2.5-liter horizontally opposed flat-four engines with 182 horsepower and 1500 pounds of towing capacity. Subaru’s trademark all-wheel-drive system is powered by a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The engine is quiet at cruising speeds but can sound grainy under heavy throttle—a condition the driver may frequently experience since the engine is tasked with pulling around about 3600 pounds worth of SUV.

For a compact SUV, the 2019 Forester returns above-average fuel economy estimates. EPA estimates 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Some competitors return better numbers, but they come standard with front-wheel drive. The Forester comes standard with all-wheel drive, which typically lowers gas mileage estimates a bit.

As the Forester has grown marginally over the last few years, its cabin has become even larger and more spacious. Subaru also reworked the dashboard, adding a touchscreen infotainment interface as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, for the first time in a Forester. This Forester will, however, be most familiar to previous Forester owners. The interior design is evolutionary rather than revolutionary.
