Best Budget EVs for Mainstream Consumers (PDF)

The automotive industry is undergoing a shift towards zero-emission vehicles, and the days of electric cars being prohibitively expensive are largely behind us. With the increasing affordability of electric vehicles, the question now is which mainstream EV is the best choice for buyers.

Despite the increase in the price of new cars in recent years, the difference between vehicles powered by internal combustion and electric vehicles has narrowed considerably. In January, the average price for a non-luxury vehicle was $45,343, while the average price for an electric vehicle, including luxury options, was just $58,724. In the United States, the ten cheapest electric vehicles are below these averages.

There are a number of great electric cars among the ten cheapest EVs, including the Hyundai Ioniq 5 starting at just $42,785, and the Kia Niro EV at $40,875. The Nissan Leaf, priced at just under $30,000 starting, is also worth considering.

2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV

However, we believe that the Chevrolet Bolt EUV is the clear winner among this group. Although most GM products are not known for providing great value for money, the Bolt EUV is an exception. With a base price of just $28,795, it is one of the most affordable electric cars on the market.

Moreover, the Bolt EUV comes with some of the best autonomous technology available. The Super Cruise feature is truly impressive and can be added at a cost of around $35,000. For that price, buyers also get heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a 10.2-inch infotainment system.

In summary, as the automotive industry transitions to zero-emission vehicles, the affordability of electric cars is rapidly increasing. While there are several great options among the ten cheapest EVs, we believe that the Chevrolet Bolt EUV is the best value for money. Its low base price and advanced autonomous technology make it a compelling choice for buyers in the market for an electric car.
